Show Notes

Karangahape full ingoa is Te Karanga a Hape - The Calling Place of Hape. Hape was a rangatira back in the rā, and his name literally means “clubbed foot” or “left behind.” When planning to pull up in Aotearoa from Hawaiki (around 1350 AD ish), everyone came together and decided to prioritise younger and physically fit people for their long and hard voyage. Hape was left behind by the Tainui waka because of his clubbed foot, but Tangaroa came to his aid, and sent a taniwha, Kaiwhare, to bring him here. When Hape arrived, he and Kaiwhare made their way into the Manukau Harbour (where Kaiwhare stayed) and Hape saw a strangely flat mountain (Ihumaatao) where he waited for the Tainui waka to arrive, calling out to them - the calling place of Hape!

The road that we know as K Road has a history of being left behind. With gentrification and crime in the top headlines, what do we know about K Road if we only looked on the internet?
